A DAY ON THE FARM | DISCOVERING THE VERGER CHAMPÊTRE

Tucked away into a little corner of the Eastern Townships, is the Verger Champetre. Owned and operated by married couple Thèrese and Mario, the site consists of over 200 acres of farmland as well as multiple different orchards and gardens for visitors to explore. It is also one of the only places in Quebec that offers visitors the chance to walk with either a miniature horse or an alpaca along an interpretive trail. Along with that experience, there is an abundance of different activities to partake in and things to see, making the Verger Champetre the perfect nature lovers’ paradise.

HOW DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD CELEBRATE VALENTINES DAY

As we head into February, stores will start going into full on Valentines mode with shelves brimming with heart shaped chocolate boxes, pink stuffed animals, and cheesy cards. Valentines Day is one of those holidays that you either love or hate, which mostly depends on if you’re single or not. Celebrated mainly in North America, this holiday started in the year 496 and is derived from an ancient Roman celebration originally to commemorate the beginning of Spring. Over the years, the church decided to turn the festival into a Christian holiday created to commemorate St Valentine, the saint of love. Nowadays, gift giving and romantic dinners are synonym with the holiday of love but in different parts of the world, they like to do things a bit differently. With Valentines Day right around the corner, we’ll be discovering 15 different countries around the world who celebrate the holiday in their own unique way.

With the holidays surrounding us in full force, this month with Universal Yums things will be a little different than usual. Normally we get the chance to try snacks from a different country every month but this time around, in celebration of the festive season, we will be trying goodies from 12 different countries. Ranging from champagne candy to mustard chips, these snacks are foods that are traditionally eaten during the holidays in their respective countries.

UNIVERSAL YUMS | TRYING SNACKS FROM THE NETHERLANDS

Home to colorful windmills blowing in the wind and winding canals surrounded by fields of brightly, colored tulips, the Netherlands is a beautiful country set in northwestern Europe. Over 17 million people call this country their home and because of this, is known as one of the most densely populated countries in the world. While it may be a popular place to live, it is also a popular place to visit with the country seeing hundreds of thousands of tourists each year most likely going to visit popular monuments and landmarks throughout the Netherlands such as the Keukenhof garden, the largest public flower garden in the world or the Anne Frank house, the home in which Anne and her family hid to escape the horrors of the Second World War. The most important thing about this country though, and the reason that we’re here right now, is their delicious food. In this month’s Universal Yums box, we will trying some extremely tasty snacks from chocolate stroopwafels, black licorice candy, and cheese and raspberry biscuits making for a unique range of options as unique as the country itself.

WHERE TO GO GHOST HUNTING IN KINGSTON, ONTARIO

Often referred to as the ‘limestone city’ Kingston, Ontario is a historic town filled with ancient buildings and stunning landscapes of the surrounding 1000 Island region. The town is home to about 130,000 people and also a couple of ghosts. That’s right, Kingston is one of the most haunted cities in Canada and one of the creepiest places I’ve ever visited. Though it may look like a charming and inviting place, and don’t get me wrong it is all of those things, it also hides a much more sinister past. From abandoned insane asylums that saw some horrific experiments during it’s time to hotels with a few permanent ghostly guests, these are the best places to visit in Kingston to spot some ghosts this spooky season.

When work gets to be a bit too stressful and you feel like you haven’t been on a vacation in what seems like forever, getting away for a few days on the weekend or even during the week is the best thing you can do for yourself. To escape into the mountains and to be surrounded by the quietness of nature, Mont Tremblant is the place to go. Over the years, I’ve noticed that I’ve been falling more and more in love with my own province and surrounding areas and I’ve been wanting to explore more of Quebec so for my last week of vacation this year, we headed off to Mont Tremblant in the Laurentians.
