The month of August was our lucky month this time around with Universal Yums as we had the chance to try some goodies from not one but four different countries. The United Kingdom is comprised of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland which are all separate countries who happen to be united under one common government. From pickled onion chips to butter toffee and melt in your mouth shortbread cookies, each country has their own distinct cuisine. The cuisine isn’t the only thing though that the United Kingdom is unique for, they have also invented and shown the world classic literature, iconic sports, and of course modern music with a surprising amount of our culture today being influenced by the English.

UNIVERSAL YUMS | TRYING SNACKS FROM TAIWAN

Though there’s certainly a lot of confusion over whether Taiwan is an actual stand alone country, one thing’s for certain is that their food is both unique and delicious. Taiwan’s cuisine is an intriguing mix between Chinese and Japanese influence and delivers dishes such as smoked plums, peanut butter mochi, and five spice crackers. Starting in the 17th century all the way until the 19th century, Taiwan was considered to be an official part of China. In the late 1800’s however, the island was ceded to Japan and then given back to China again fifty years later. The issue still hasn’t been resolved to this day and there is still much confusion surrounding the status of Taiwan, with many nations including the United States recognizing Taiwan as a part of China while the people of Taiwan have different views and consider themselves their own separate country.

UNIVERSAL YUMS | TRYING SNACKS FROM SPAIN

Barriqa Illena, corazon contento! This famous Spanish saying translates to ‘a full belly and a happy heart’ which is the goal for this month as our taste buds head off on a journey to Spain. From flamenco dancing, lively music, and colorful celebrations, Spain’s rich culture is characterized not only by these things but also by their distinct cuisine. The country is home to an abundance of traditional dishes including paella, gazpacho, chorizo, and one of their more popular ones, tapas. Tapas are small snacks and appetizers which come in a variety of different flavors and textures which is then combined to create a massive sampler style meal. This month’s Universal Yums box pulls inspiration from this very dish with snacks such as ham flavored chips and lemon cookies, there is sure to be something for just about everyone.

It’s the beginning of a new month which means that it’s time for another Universal Yums subscription box review. For the month of March we headed out on a journey to Poland to try treats ranging from chocolate covered plums to lobster tail candies among other traditional goodies. Though there are quite a few downs in Polish history ranging from second World War which claimed the lives of 20% of the civilian population and the fact that the country fell under the communist rule after the war, Poland has proved to be a resilient country through it all. The country has emerged as a prosperous nation which has left its own unique mark on Europe as well as the world’s culture. Poland can be thanked for such inventions as movies with sound as well as the discovery of the sun in the center of our solar system. They’re also well known for their delicious food which we will be trying today so let’s get right into it.

France, the country known for the city of love, the Eiffel tower, and of course for yummy treats such as crepes, baguettes, and macaroons. It is also the country that pioneered the term ‘fine dining’ after a group of French chefs set out to develop a style of cuisine that was distinctly French without any influence from the Western world back in the 1700’s. Though there are some treats in this months box that might seem familiar to you such as potato chips, rest assured that chestnut caramels and violet infused chocolate bars among many other snacks included are purely French, so let’s get right into the snacks from this month’s Universal Yums box and bon appetit.

With a new month comes a new Universal Yums box filled with snacks and candies to try from a different country around the world. For the month of January we will be embarking on a journey to the sunny destination of Greece, where olives, white buildings, and ocean views are a plenty. Ancient Greece is a country that has had plenty of influence on the Western world and not just for the creation of the Olympic games but for an abundance of other things as well such as theater, alarm clocks, cranes, and watermills but more importantly we can thank the Greek for their delicious snacks that we’ll be taste testing this month. As always I’ll be including a little snippet about each goody that we’ll be trying as well as my opinion on each snack.

For the month of December things were a bit different with the boxes where normally each box would focus on one specific country to try snacks from, this month we tried snacks from 13 different countries. To celebrate the Christmas season and all of the other different holidays that are celebrated around the world, Universal Yums brought us snacks that are traditionally eaten on these holidays to give us a taste of what Christmas is like in these other countries.
